IEEE (Eye-triple-E) is the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. IEEE and its members inspire a global community through its highly cited publications, conferences, technology standards, and professional and educational activities. The full name is the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., although the organization is most popularly known and referred to by the letters I-E-E-E.

Through its members, the IEEE is a leading authority in technical areas ranging from computer engineering, biomedical technology and telecommunications, to electric power, aerospace and consumer electronics, among others. The IEEE has:
  • more than 395,000 members in over 160 countries, almost 45 percent of whom are from outside the United States
  • more than 90,000 student members
  • 331 sections in ten geographic regions worldwide
  • 1,952 chapters that unite local members with similar technical interests
  • 1,855 student branches in 80 countries
  • 483 student branch chapters at colleges and universities
  • 338 affinity groups - IEEE Affinity Groups are non-technical sub-units of one or more Sections or a Council. The Affinity Group patent entities are the IEEE-USA Consultants' Network, Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD), Women in Engineering (WIE) and Life Members (LM)
  • 38 societies and 7 technical councils representing the wide range of technical interests.
